High Prices Amid Floods to Haunt Pakistan

High Prices Amid Flood Crisis to Haunt Pakistan

Where the whole country is suffering from floods, shameful rise in the prices are also witnessed. It is a point to ponder why it happens and how it can be controlled.

Flash floods wreak havoc in Pakistan; above 4.6 million people affected: above 300,000 homeless; 40+ small dams breached, 210+ bridges collapsed; 1000+ people dead and 10M people displaced. About 90% crops in Sindh province ravaged. Pakistan’s meteorological department has warned of more flash flooding ahead. Pakistan receives record 784% increase in rainfall, highest ever annual rainfall in the country’s history. The country has called on the international community to help as it struggles to cope with the aftermath of torrential rains that have triggered massive floods.

Meanwhile, there is a huge disruption in the supply of the commodities, basic needs, aid products and use-able material. The prices of petroleum products has reached to a level that it has now led to a spike in in the Sensitive Price Index to a record high at 44.58 per cent. It is alarming and absolutely calling for a super-fast inflation in the country.

Pakistan, either blames the climate change for these deadly floods or longtime economic disability, the individual non-ethics and immorality is the basic problem here. We, as a nation, are so insensitive that history of the nations, may be, never recorded such insensitivity.

Shelter tent prices have risen to PKR 15,000 due to increased demand for flood victims. The prices of the waterproof tent had been doubled from their previous rates. Isnโ€™t it the low morality of our nation?

According to DAWN, the ongoing floods in Baluchistan and Sindh has created much havoc and destruction of crops. It has led to a rocket speed increase in the prices of fruits and vegetables in the market, all over Pakistan. Think for a second, where lies the psychology of our nation!

As I talked about the psychology, let me explain why and how it happens when an individual or a group of people go low-than-animal level in the disaster times, just for their super-fast marketing and business.

According to psychology, there is a chemical in brain; called Dopamine. The release of this chemical makes the man selfish. As its amount increases and the centers of dopamine in the brain dilates, the selfishness also increases and makes a human being act like a Zombie. However, dopaminergic reactions can be constructive or destructive. If you want to get up from your bed in the morning, to do something constructive with high ambitions, itโ€™s a dopaminergic reaction. On the other hand, itโ€™s also a dopaminergic reaction if you are compelling yourself to do a harm to people or even yourself. So dopamine can be a motivation and also make you a selfish human. The opposite of selfishness is empathy.

So, in the recent case, these people are just dopamine zombies who have ‘dilated centers’ of dopamine in their brain. They have become so selfish that they donโ€™t care if anyone is suffering from poverty or helplessness. These zombies, in the times of disaster, just think about polishing their own businesses.

Moreover, below, there is another example, besides increase in prices, that has given goose bumps to the whole nation. Five brothers from Kohistan swiped away with flood, after waiting for long and tiring 5 hours of hope, to get rescued by some helipad. The caption on the image shows the angry reaction of Pakistanis.

If you are not one of such people who are high in destructive dopamine and selfishness, then say thanks to the Creator, for being a human at least.

Flood in Pakistan is still there with all its up-coming disasters in the Sindh and Punjab. If you want to donate the flood affectees, I am listing here the organizations which are working for this cause. So, don’t wait, help before its too late!
