Why do we Classify and Judge People?

Why do we Classify and Judge People?

According to any normal human being’s graph, if we see, we do not live conscious life even 10%. We live a subconscious life. This is the biggest harm we do to ourselves and does unrepairable damage to the biggest gift given to us by Allah i.e., the Brain or Intellectual core of our body. We even don’t realize that it was the only organ on whose basis we would be asked questions by the Creator, on the day of judgment. We would definitely face the question that what have we been thinking with this brain all life, or even we tried to think anything, through this machine, or not?

Being Muslims we all know the Hadith that all the actions we do are strongly dependent on our intentions behind them. So, we would be asked about all those decisions we made in life, by using our brain (a gift from God). Intentions are dependent on our thoughts and thought building is the real problem we are facing. We have to find out which are those factors on which our thinking is dependent. So, to understand the answer to the question that why we classify and judge people, this whole scenario was important to understand.

If we see on the epidermal or surface level, every human being is owning the confused type of behavior, either consciously or unconsciously. If you record one day of a person’s life for an experiment and analyze the whole video in front of him, you will see that the person unconsciously makes hundreds of classifications in so many things, in those 24 hours. This classification can be of products or human beings. For example, while driving his car, if he sees some beggar on signal, he will subconsciously make a decision in his mind whether that beggar is a genuine needy or a con artist/fraudulent.

How do we think we do that? We judge and we have to classify people because it is our mental make. Our brain is naturally made to classify things and people completely, in every situation. Not only elders, but children also do the same. However, a child’s sense is not that strong to make classifications, he is properly guided by elders to do it, wrongly or rightly. For example, we taught children not to trust the people they don’t know. Also, they (children) have to judge the words of some unknown person or even acquaintance, if they are being told something to know or to do.

So, everything is classified under certain windows or categories. It is also part of our conscious parenting (Tarbiyyah) that we have to do human classification by hook or by crook. Means, it is evident. That’s why, e.g., if we start from a family system, we classify people, either we less know or completely know, under certain rooms, in our mind. We build huge strong walls in those rooms that take a lot of time to remove those walls, later in life. We not only build them but also put strong trust in those walls.  That’s why it is rare that children to trust a person other than their family members.

So, psychologically and statistically speaking, classification plays a big role in the designing of your brain (thinking capacity). The interesting thing here is that our brains do it for the sake of our goodness. The radar system in the mind actually gives us a big favor by classifying the things in the outside world. Now let’s come to the actual problem.

The problem is not that we classify things or our brain does the classification of things and people around us. The problem is the embarrassment of the moment when we are being classified by others. Here also raised a question if it was a natural thing then why it was embarrassing for us? We ourselves definitely would have to enjoy being classified, as we feel satisfaction while classifying others.

So, the answer to this question is that it is definitely an instrument given by Allah SW.T but we cannot use it everywhere and for everyone. In an ideal case scenario, this instrument should not be used by human beings.  which means it can only be used when there is a danger in society. For example, a gun is used when there is a dangerous situation. Otherwise, it is not used in a normal situation and will be considered a danger itself that it can harm anyone anytime, without any reason. The classification of people is just like an example of this gun. Every person would feel a  danger that he or she would be classified at any time, by being graded into a certain window.

In history, there are a lot of movements have been made against the classification of People.  especially the liberals and left Wings in the society raised their voices to eliminate this problem. Contrary to this right-wing society never condemned this problem. instead, they openly said that they will judge people to highlight who is right and who is wrong.

So it is a big problem we need to understand that we are not doing anything consciously that is for the betterment of society. And the indicator is the only one that is why am I doing a thing for someone that I don’t like for myself. If I start doing something for others that I like for myself also then society would definitely start getting better. That’s why there is a golden Hadees also for all of us that is do like the same thing for your brother which you like for yourself and don’t like that thing for your brother if you don’t like it for yourself.

Here at this point science actually fails.  why would I need to classify people into good or bad Black or White, successful or unsuccessful, up and down lower or upper, or whatever when I don’t like the same thing for myself. So, we should be conscious of our affairs with other people and should challenge our conscious routine again and again. This is the first step in the journey of self-actualization and this is what makes humans different from animals.
